Today we focus on advocate and journalist Helen Dolphin, and her latest initiative.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h3-style\">Helen Dolphin MBE<\/h2>\n<p class=\"h4-style\">The Advocate Who Will Stop at Nothing to Improve Accessibility for Disabled Travelers<\/p>\n<p>At age 22, PhD student Helen Dolphin contracted Meningococcal Septicemia, enduring numerous surgeries and eventually having all four limbs amputated. After a lengthy recovery process, she was unable to return to scientific research and so retrained as a journalist with ITV Anglia News.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Helen is a recent law graduate, works as an independent mobility consultant and is the director of <a href=\"http:\/\/wwww.peopleparking.org\" rel=\"nofollow\">PeoplesParking.org<\/a>. css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1501160737360{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;padding-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_inner css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1494877311579{background-color: #ffffff !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h4-style\">Refused Entry on Mass Transit<\/h2>\n<p>The most shocking statistics come in response to the question of <em>\u2018Have you ever been refused entry on a bus?\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A staggering 64% of respondents reported being refused entry to a bus on at least one occasion and an overwhelming majority reported being treated poorly by other passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 64% of respondents who reported being refused entry onto the bus, most cited lack of cooperation or misinformation about accessibility from bus drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers regularly expressed disdain towards disabled travelers, and occasionally even refused to lower the ramp for them to board the bus.\u00a0 This could be due to the fact that drivers realize a disabled passenger means increased dwell times due to wheelchair securement procedures, or possibly that some drivers are simply\u00a0not comfortable performing\u00a0wheelchair securement techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Health issues posed challenges for drivers as well, with respondents noting\u00a0pregnancy, back injury and weight as reasons they could not be secured properly.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1502304177229{padding-top: 50px !important;padding-bottom: 50px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 48px; Drivers should receive regular and thorough training on how to accommodate the needs of disabled travelers.
