Dear Mr. Reaume,
2247 miles into our
business trip from Chicago to Lake Elsinor California, I had just hung up on the
cell phone after letting our clients know that we were within a few blocks of
our destination. It had been raining ever since we entered the Majave Desert to
begin this last leg of our trip. Perry (my caregiver and business associate) and
I were looking forward to a relaxing evening.
Upon entering the left
hand, up-hill, canyon curve we noted a small white pickup truck coming toward us
from the opposite direction at high speed. Before either of us could even blink,
he lost control of his truck, entered our lane, and hit us head on. The combined
speed of the two vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol, was 100
mph. When we came to, we began to assess our situation. Perry was trapped by the
metal from the firewall and dashboard but didn't think anything had been broken.
I looked around and saw that I was still sitting in my wheelchair and that it
hadn't moved. More surprisingly, it seemed to still function. The lap board I
had been using seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I found one half of the
split board in the front seat and the other half in the back of the van. My
wheelchair lap belt had been pulled loose on the right side. I looked at my
Q'Straint system and amazingly enough, it was totally intact. The shoulder belt
locked properly, the lap belt remained secure, and all four corners of my chair
remained solidly connected to the floor. Perry walked and I rolled away from
this accident.
I owe my life to this restraint system, and I just wanted
to thank you. Keep up the good work. Needless to say, my new van will be
equipped with Q'Straint.
