Results of the Survey

Contacting manufacturers to obtain systems to test.

As a result of the telephone survey, the manufacturers of the three most commonly used systems were contacted. Each manufacturer supplied with a complete restraint system for testing purposes at no cost.

Each system complied with and has been approved by the State of Minnesota, Department of Public Safety. Additionally, all devices meet applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

Each securement system utilized four adjustable securement strap assemblies which attached to the structural frame of the mobility aid at four separate points: two strap assemblies for attachment to the front of the mobility aid, and two strap assemblies for attachment to the rear of the mobility aid. Each securement system provided a Type-2 , three point occupant restraint system consisting of a lap (pelvic belt and a shoulder (upper torso) belt. Each system was equipped with a single-point push-button "quick-disconnect" for the lap belt and the lower end of the shoulder belt. Each wheelchair securement device provided a means of removing the slack from the device either a cam-buckle or a over center buckle assembly. Each system required the use of a track (floor plate) and "positive locking" Anchoring points.
